Nuove ricerche a Solunto (2021)
2021
New researches in Solunto (2021) · The paper presents an overview of the ongoing researches in Solunto by the University of Palermo. In 2021 stratigraphical sondages were undertaken in two areas of the town: 1) in the great sanctuary above the theatre, in the frame of a major project aimed at addressing several still unresolved issues. That area, as a matter of fact, has never been considered as a whole; the sacred buildings have not been studied, and their mutual relationships and the links with the adjacent terraces have never been properly examined; 2) in the North Baths near the agora, as a corollary of the systematic study of water management, some sondages were made by G. Polizzi. Fin…
Ipotesi di ricostruzione virtuale della piazza maggiore a Noto Antica
2019
Today ancient Noto is a medieval archaeological site, yet to be discovered. After the 1693 earthquake, the ancient city of Noto, in the middle of the Baroque period, was rebuilt in another place and the ancient city was abandoned. The first excavation campaign in ancient Noto by Paolo Orsi dates back to the period between 1894 and 1896. In the following years there will be other excavation campaigns, in which other architectural and sculptural relics will be found. They are today part of the collection of the Civic Museum. The contribution focuses on the study of the piazza Maggiore (Main Square) site, the center of the ancient city and on the surrounding buildings. After analyzing the limi…
Un'ipotesi per la cattedrale di Iglesias
2015
This article focuses on the 3D virtual reconstruction of the first restoration project of the cathedral of San Maria in Iglesias (first half of 16th century). A complex work of renovation of the old medieval temple, which likely was meant to radically transform the presbytery of the church and to replace the previous timber roof truss of the nave with a simple ribbed vaults, as several clues seem to suggest. In the absence of archival data, the virtual reconstruction allowed to verify some hypotheses originated from the observation of material traces, ascribable to the construction phase of the building here analysed. Indirect proofs seem to suggest that a collapse, happened in an unspecifi…
AR to Rediscover Heritage: the Case Study of Salerno Defense System
2022
Recognizing and transmitting the uniqueness and identity of one’s territory represents fundamental step to guarantee its sustainability, protection and valorisation. Of particular importance, moreover, is the issues of the lesser-known heritage of great value but which, unfortunately, in some cases is still little known and often in a state of neglect. However, the diffusion of new technology and the great development of digitization positively contribute to the accessibility and visibility of these patrimonies, increasing the knowledge and the dissemination. This contribution focuses on one of the towers of the coastal defence system, a perfect example of a lesser-known architecture of gre…
From the “Sacred Theatres” of Andrea Pozzo to the International Truncated Calotte: History and Representation of the Immacolatella Church’s Tribune i…
2022
The contribution, divided between history and representation, aims to analyse the design genesis and the sources used by the architect Giovanni Amico for the modernization of the Immacolatella church’s tribune in Trapani (since 1732). The church is devoid of studies and surveys with digital instrumentation but its unique compositional characteristics, which exploit the theme of the manipulation of space and light for scenographic and liturgical purposes, require in-depth analysis. The solution applied to the church tribune combines different compositional themes linked to the Roman design world and in particular by Andrea Pozzo in relation to the “sacred theatres” produced for the Jesuits a…
Virtual Museum Net
2006
A project named ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” is presented, whose objective is to provide an unitary image of the archaeological heritage of Calabria (a Southern Italian region), through Computer Technology, Multimedia Designing and Virtual Reconstructions. The project aims to encourage the technological transfer of the most advanced researches in the exploitation and conservation sector of the Cultural Heritage. The ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” project is included in the context of Knowledge Media Design for Museums. This project links the museum scenery and multimedia, in order to use technology as system of representation.
INTEGRATED SURVEYING AND MODELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE DOCUMENTATION AND VISUALIZATION OF THREE ANCIENT HOUSES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA
2015
The paper is focused on the layout and testing of a workflow for the documentation of archeological remains, addressed to the study, visualization and information data input. Topographic, laser scanning and photogrammetric data have been used to build up 3D textured models of three ancient houses built in Sicily and in Tunisia in the Hellenistic and Roman age. 3D models have been used to extract conventional representations (plans and sections), analyze the geometric and proportional features and propose a virtual reconstruction of the original layout. The final step of the research work has been addressed to the creation of a web-based tools for the visualization of the models addressed to…
Hulot's Selinunte: digital analysis and virtual reconstruction
2021
Some drawings feature a powerful evocative nature, capable of presenting a truthful vision that can replace, in collective imagination, the actual expression of reality. This is the case of the "restorations" of Selinunte proposed by the French architect Jean-Louis Hulot (Paris 1871 -1959) which still today evoke the splendours of the ancient city. Thanks to his accurate surveys and inspired by the visit to the remains of further ancient cities such as Priene, Tera, Delos, and Pompeii, Hulot proposed in his watercolour drawings a vision of a "living" city, rendered at the height of its architectural and social magnificence. The paper presents a study on digital solutions that combine data f…
Techniques and procedures for the definition of AR applications in architectural and archaeological contexts
2022
The growth and development of Augmented reality applications and their use in different contexts has been recently fostered by two factors: i) the hardware and computing power of mobile devices has been radically improved; ii) Apple and Google have released two development platforms for AR applications. AR has been a major topic in research on cultural heritage fruition for many years, but the latest developments are really promising, and they seem capable of overcoming the difficulties that have delayed the diffusion of this technology. The paper focuses the potential and criticalities of augmented reality systems used for fruition purposes in architectural and archaeological contexts. The…
